The distinction that matters most: card and fob systems verify a credential at the door; electronic key control verifies authorization within the key itself, and the cylinder doesn’t need to be powered, wired, or online to enforce it.

- Full audit trail without connectivity. Remote and outdoor locations that will never have a reliable network connection still generate a complete, timestamped access log.

The trade-off is one of process, not technology: electronic key control depends on keys actually being returned to their management station on a regular basis so audit logs stay current and new authorizations reach the field.
